You can also hire the help of private investigators who have a database of criminal records of people which can be accessed by paying the investigators for their service. In case the name of the person is not present in their database, then you can employ their services and they will find out more information about a person’s past for you. They private eye will investigate someone’s background and they will be able to find out if someone is a criminal and let you know.

There are many websites on the Internet that let you do a criminal records search online. While some charge a fee for it, there are many who offer these services for free. With proper research on the Internet, you can find out about criminal records of people free. But most of the time you get what you pay for. So personally I do not recommend making a big decision based on a website to search criminal records for free.
